Vulamasango means "Open Gates" in Xhosa. We are a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) situated in Cape Town, South Africa. We open our gates to children aged 8 to 18 from our local communities, who have no other safe space to go to after school. Our After School Care (ASC) Programme has been registered since 2018 and runs daily programmes including Academic Support, Psycho-social Support, Lifeskills, Arts and Crafts, Sports and Music. For older youth, we offer Skills Development training including Biodynamic Gardening Education, Sewing and Carpentry. All who attend are offered a hot meal daily, in many cases this is the only meal they have.
From 2009 to 2023, Vulamasango opened its doors to children whose parents had either passed away, or, for various reasons, were no longer able to look after their children. In other words orphaned, neglected and sexually abused children from the townships of Cape Town, and children who had been impoverished to such a severe degree that survival without outside help had become impossible. Sadly, due to insufficient government support and the world economy taking a downturn, alongside the challenges presented by COVID, we had to make the unbearably hard decision to close our Residential Care Programme. We now run only as an After School and Skills Development Programme.
Since 2018, Vulamasango has been registered as an official Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) by the Department of Social Development (DoSD).
